YOGI OF THE MONTH: CLAIRE SERSUN

YOGI OF THE MONTH Claire Sersun
THE EXTRA Q+A

WHERE YOU GREW UP: I grew up moving all over the country with my Air Force parents. We finally settled on Los Angeles, the small town of El Segundo to be more specific, when I was in my 5th grade year. From then on I learned how to be a Southern-Californian girl. And yes, I am still afraid of the cold.

WHEN YOU MOVED TO NYC: Summer 2016 – College!

EDUCATION/OCCUPATION: I am a student at Marymount Manhattan College as well as a Professional Dancer, Model, Photographer, and Yoga Teacher.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA? I’ve been practicing for around 3 years.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO SONIC? I started my adventure here at Sonic in June of this year.

MOST UNFORGETTABLE YOGA MEMORY? The 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training at Sonic this summer.

LIFE LESSON LEARNED FROM YOGA? Anything becomes bearable (dare I say easier?) when you focus on your breath.

FAVORITE MUSICIAN: Tori Kelly

FAVORITE MOVIE: My childhood all time favorite, the Harry Potter series. Though, I just recently saw Dumplin’ and that was fantastic.

FAVORITE BOOK: Can I say the Harry Potter series again?

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE: Love God and love my neighbor

FAVORITE SEASON: I was going to say SEASONS because LA doesn’t have any, but if I had to pick one…I’d have to say fall.

FAVORITE ARTIST: Trisha Brown

FAVORITE NEW YORK MEMORY: Over the summer, a group of my friends and I travel to Governor’s Island at sunset. While there we ran in into a hula hooping disco party thing and we just hula hooped into the dusk. Afterwards, we just kept walking, exploring the island at night, talking, enjoying the sights. We ran into the hammocks and we sat and talked, enjoyed the crickets, the nature around, the cool air. Later on we ran into a dance performance in one of the old houses there. We then ended our night sitting by the edge of the island looking at the Manhattan skyline. In that moment, I couldn’t believe I lived in New York City, the city that never sleeps, the city dreams are made of. I have to constantly find moments like these while living in the city. If I don’t, I fear I might become drowned in the hustle and bustle of the city. But what a spectacular season to find these moments! The holiday season is filled with them, if one is simply open to finding them.

FAVORITE PLACE IN MANHATTAN: Governor’s Island in the summer. Bryant Park every time of year.
