Alumni of the Month: Mengyin Lin

Yoga has changed my life! I can’t imagine how else to live without the gift of Yoga. It has opened up previously unknown space within me, physically, mentally and spiritually. It has taught me to live in the present and forgo expectations, to realize that I am not only my thoughts, and to fill me with love and compassion for myself, and more importantly, for other people I come in contact with and all living beings. The world of Yoga constantly challenges me, guides me and heals me. To me, the practice of Yoga is as personal as it is universal

I joined Teacher Training to deepen my own practice, which has been evolving for the past couple of years as I went through 200-hour and 300-hour training at Sonic. I didn’t know if I wanted to teach. But the more I know about Yoga, the more I wanted to share it with my loved ones as well as strangers, because I see what Yoga, sometimes just simple things like one single breath, can help people in need. It has cultivated the teacher inside me that I was not aware of.

I am grateful for all the teachers at Sonic and all the dear friends I have made through the Teacher Training. I will cherish these mentorships and friendships for a lifetime, and many more!

I first started playing around with Yoga, later I knew as asanas and asanas only, with these Chinese DVDs I bought when I was in high school. I sat in front of the TV and moved with the slender lady in flowy yoga pants. I had no idea what I was doing, really. My first in-person yoga class at a donation-based studio on Saint Marks street during my freshman year in college. It was the last class of the day and the room was packed with more students than it could reasonably fit. I sweated liked I had never before and smelled odors that I didn’t know existed. Despite everything—I don’t know if it was because that a room of people were breathing the same breath and moving in unison, or when I closed my eyes in savasana I was able to exist outside of my mortal body for just a millisecond—the class had a powerful effect on me that was inexplicable to me back then. Yoga has been an essential part of my life ever since.
