Yogi of the Month: Derick McKoy, Jr.

GREW UP: Miami, Florida

MOVED TO NYC: I moved to NYC August of 2015 for school and to pursue my dreams.

OCCUPATION: Dancer and Student

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA? I’ve been practicing yoga off and on since 2016. This past year has been my first year of consistent yoga practice.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO SONIC? I’ve been coming to Sonic for one year now and it’s been amazing.

MOST UNFORGETTABLE YOGA MEMORY? Every class brings new memories as I’m being pushed to better myself. I especially love whenever I begin conquering a new arm balance. I find those are more challenging for me and every time I accomplish one, I feel refreshed and proud of the work it took me to get there.

LIFE LESSON LEARNED FROM YOGA? Yoga has taught me that you should bring a higher sense of awareness to the things you are doing, not just for your benefit, but for everything around you as well.

FAVORITE MUSICIAN: Antonio Vivaldi

FAVORITE MOVIE: Pitch Perfect is my favorite movie.

FAVORITE BOOK: I don’t necessarily have a favorite book. I love reading and I try to read several novels a year whenever I have time. Right now I’m reading a book called The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena.

FAVORITE SEASON: I absolutely love Fall. It’s the right amount of chilly weather and the right time to bundle up and drink hot tea.

FAVORITE ARTIST: Whitney Houston

FAVORITE NEW YORK MEMORY: Going to the New York Performing Arts Library and watching dance videos in the archives.

FAVORITE PLACE IN MANHATTAN: My favorite place in Manhattan is probably the Joyce Theater. I watch lots of concert there throughout the year.

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE: I wholeheartedly believe in this and I tell everyone I know this when we are met with unexpected events in life. “Everything happens for a reasons. That which is for you, is for you and you will be where you’re supposed to be.”
