Yoga, specifically Sonic, has made a major difference in my life. I break out into a smile the moment I walk into the studio, regardless of what happened at work or otherwise earlier in the day. Whoever might be there at the time, I always feel surrounded by warm, generous people, which isn’t always the case in New York City. The asana is another part of the wonderful experience, as I always feel refreshed upon its conclusion. I won’t claim to have been transformed by yoga (I still have many shortcomings!), but I feel calmer, happier, and more patient than I did before I picked it up, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Yoga is an integral part of my life, and I don’t foresee that changing.
I don’t remember my first class experience, but I distinctly remember being greeted by Mitch upon my arrival and wondering what I got myself into! And I know Sam’s class was among if not the first I took, and her class was and remains a combination of wonderful humor, terrific music, and challenging yet highly enjoyable poses. I eventually did teacher training, at which I took baby steps toward learning how to breathe deeply and meditate. I’ve always found meditation difficult, but I continue to work at it. I met many wonderful people in teacher training as well, some of whom I’m fortunate enough to still see regularly. I miss our Sunday breakfast of donuts and oranges during training (a Yogic diet if there ever was one), but at least I still get to see some of the folks!
