ALUMNI OF THE MONTH TONIE WARNER

1. Where has Yoga has taken you?
Yoga has brought me closer to myself, and has made me exponentially aware of my inner dialogue, how I treat myself, and others. Since my 200hr training, my physical practice has deepened – it’s become a lot less ego-driven, and more sacred. My sadhana has taught me how to show up for myself, and what it means to want a practice or a pose. My continued study has given me a greater respect and curiosity to the traditional, and philosophy, and awakened an exploration of my why, and my subtle body. Yoga found me and prepared me for a big step I didn’t know I was even going to take in terms of my career. After a huge leap of faith, I am currently teaching yoga full time, and exploring what I offer to yogis through teacher trainings, group classes and retreats.

2. How did your yoga teacher training influence your life?
When I first started TT, I was certain that I wanted to teach, and as time progressed, I wasn’t so sure that I had anything worth sharing as a teacher – that my asana practice wasn’t good enough, or that people would want to hear what I had to say. The complete teacher training, and support of the training staff helped me find my authentic voice, and continues to empower me through challenges. Im more patient with myself, and instead seeing the fleeting temporary ‘things’ and feelings directly in front of me, I am able to push through that and focus on a bigger picture ahead. Then those challenges can become lessons. I’m always excited to learn, and to see questions that come up for me. TT was the gateway to all of that – it brightened my path as a student and teacher. Currently I am enrolled Sonic Yoga’s 300 hr program. I’ve learned so much… so much. The modules and mentorship that I’ve taken to date have really forced me to give a thorough look at who I think I am as a teacher, and who I’m really, really serving, and put what I’m teaching to action.

3. What was your first yoga class experience?
Oh my goodness! Lol. My first class was a Monday morning 7am open level with 4 people, each with varying levels of practice, and physical constraints/injuries. We pushed through together – that class taught me the more than them actually. Class went well, and was the start of many Mondays together, with a growing number of students over time. I remember that class always, it reaffirmed what I knew as a teacher, as well as my ability to hold space. Did I know everything, was I an expert on cueing and adjustments, no? And that was okay. But I was able to see where I can continue to grow, and it made me excited to create a practice, and include modifications that served my students’ needs.
