Alumni of the month: allie beckman
I took my first yoga class in 2010 in the basement of a YMCA. I had no clue what I was getting into. The class challenged my body in a new way, leaving me totally sweaty, and I remember walking home in the cold December night feeling an incredible sense of bliss, peace, and ease. I was hooked.
When I think about how yoga has changed my life, the phrase “root to rise” comes to mind. For me, yoga has been an ever-evolving journey to the center of myself which allows me to explore and engage the world around me more fully and presently. In a beautiful dance that is much the spirit of the practice, yoga brings me in so that I can expand and connect outwardly, only to come back home within once again. And so it goes.
When I did my Yoga Teacher Training with Sonic in 2016, it was the thread that wove together all the pieces of the practice I had been gathering for years. It opened a space for me to release and heal old wounds which then allowed space for my life to evolve and grow. Afterward, I started teaching nearly full-time and eventually started my first business centered around accessible and trauma-informed yoga. During the pandemic, it became clear to me to let that business go which then allowed for my current path to unfold as a financial planner. Though different on the surface, yoga supports my financial practice so that I can show up in a way that is inclusive and rooted in truth and service.
After practicing for over 10 years, it is freeing to know that I can choose any path, and yoga will always be the current upon which I ride through this life. It anchors me so that I can surrender and trust the process of my own evolution. Eternal gratitude to Lauren and Sonic Yoga for giving my practice a home and being such a huge milestone in my journey.
