I have such a vivid memory of coming to Sonic Yoga. I had finished my YTT200 training in Bali with The Sacred Fig and was looking to continue my yoga education, because once you start that journey you realize that yoga is a lifetime of learning, of being a student and of practicing with a beginners mind. More than anything, yoga taught me how to meditate. The ability to still the mind and body is profound. In the words of Patanjali ‘yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind’ and I can’t think of a better way to achieve stillness than a rigorous asana practice. To open the heart. To stretch and strengthen the body. To move the body in such a way that you are opening subtle energy channels and massaging internal organs. It’s friggin’ awesome!
Sonic Yoga introduced me up to a range of teachers each so deeply committed to their practice, so personal, so unique. There is so much love, care, depth of knowledge. The community is diverse. The energy in the studio is palpable.
More than anything yoga gave me the gift of equanimity. I always feel that I can come back to center. And regardless of challenges or heartache or loss I may face, I find my center. It is a remarkable practice. Particularly when you feel the practice enabling you and guiding you in all areas of your life; relationships, work, other passions and projects. Suddenly you are no longer simply practicing yoga or ‘doing an asana class’ you are yoga. You find it spilling into all areas of your life.
So, I leave you with this other Patanjali quote which is a reminder that we can handle so much more than we believe we can when we come from a place of equanimity.
“There is always a light within us that is free from all sorrow and grief, no matter how much we may be experiencing suffering.”
Namaste and see you on the mat!
