YOGI OF THE MONTH: Caroline Alarcon Loor

YOTM: Caroline Alarcon Loor

GREW UP: I was born here in the USA, but I spent my childhood in
Ecuador, where my family is from.

OCCUPATION: Photographer, visual artist, early childhood teacher.

MOVED TO NYC: Late 1995.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA? About 8 years, on and off, but for the last few years it has became steady, thanks to Sonic.

WHAT DOES YOGA DO FOR YOU? It removes tension from my entire body, especially my tight shoulders. It has made me more flexible and I have more control of my body in dance. From my experience in doing yoga, I know that I can do anything if I put my mind and time into it!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO SONIC? It has been about 5 years.

WHAT CLASSES DO YOU USUALLY TAKE? Christopher Temple’s and Keith Pertington’s classes. They are great teachers who employ different styles that complement
my practice.

MOST UNFORGETTABLE YOGA MEMORY? -Definitely when I did my first headstand. It just seems so hard to do, but with the right technique and practice anybody can do it.

LIFE LESSON LEARNED FROM YOGA? Something may look hard or impossible to do, until you go for it and start somewhere. (I learned this in Keith’s class. I always
thought I wasn’t ready for his class, but I would have always been afraid if I had never tried it).

FAVORITE MUSICIAN: On repeat in my iPod is Robi Draco Rosa at the moment, a
Puerto Rican version of Lenny Kravitz.

FAVORITE MOVIE: I haven’t watched any movies in a long time but can I tell you
what my favorite TV show is at the moment? -I’m obsessed with Sherlock.

FAVORITE BOOK: Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coehlo.

GOALS IN LIFE: So many! Probably too many to say. My main one is to have a creative team and build a community center that offers a tutoring program in art for kids.

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE: The world gives you what you give the world.

HOBBIES: All of my past hobbies aren’t really hobbies anymore. My hobby when I was a high school student was taking photos of my family and friends. Later I decided to study photography and art. Then for many years I used to work out and do yoga once in a while. And just last year I decided to do my yoga teacher training to be better at what I love. There’s no time to have a hobby now!

WHAT DOES PEACE OF MIND MEAN TO YOU? Being able to control my emotions and not letting them control me. Knowing and feeling I have been fair to myself and

FAVORITE NEW YORK MEMORY: It would probably have to be when a couple of my friends owned a music studio in Greenpoint, BK. There was always something creative happening there. -That was every weekend.  At that time I was a rebel that stayed out until 5am!!!

FAVORITE PLACE IN MANHATTAN: Any park that has a river view! Battery Park in TriBeCa, and Gantry Park in Long Island City, I have fond memories of those places.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? So much! Nature, NYC, words, my mother’s kindness, my dad’s
strength, strong women, artists who aren’t afraid of criticism, the yogis at Sonic, my teachers, and people from all over with different occupations and points of view!
