My Sankalpa by Monica Shum

Sankalpa is a deeply rooted intention or heartfelt resolution that aligns your thoughts and
actions with your true purpose. Originating from ancient Vedic traditions, this practice
recognizes the mind’s power to shape reality. By setting a Sankalpa, you enhance your yoga
journey and carry its impact into your everyday life with clarity and purpose.
As a yoga/meditation teacher and a wellness coach, in everyday life, I hope to be able to share
and influence with my knowledge and experiences. So here are a little something about my
Sankalpa.
1. Health empowerment
Working towards a more simple and an organic diet. Pay attention more on where and how my
source of food come from. Shifting towards a more plant based diet. For empowerment of
physical strength, integrate more cardio exercise such as biking. From an asana level,
continue my daily practice of Vinyasa to cultivate the smooth shakti flow in my body.
Moreover, moving towards practicing Hatha/Iyengar to get a deeper understanding of body
mechanics.
2. Relationship Cultivation
If there is no emotional connection, there is no relationship. Relationship with people requires
chemistry and effort. Authenticity is the key. I feel the best when I can connect with people in
the most genuine and authentic way. I strongly believe that joy comes from being able to be
ourselves in whatever relationship and environment we are in. No matter if it is a personal or
business relationship, my continuous goal is to cultivate them with a gentle heart and genuine
intention.
3. Personal/Spiritual Growth
Learning to enjoy tranquility and solitude are the two things I have been working on. I found
myself gaining lots of mileage in spiritual growth when I can sit myself quietly to enjoy
journaling, reading, and just observing my surroundings. Learning to be your own company
and enjoying that has been a journey for me. With my career path and my previous life in the
corporate world, I had no time and space to be with by myself. With my pursuit in yoga
practice and teaching, I became more and more appreciative to meditation. The gain of mental
and physical health when practicing meditation is so powerful. Continuing to work towards
consistency and discipline is what I am working on to gain spiritual growth.
4. Play Capacity
In life, we have to enjoy and have fun in what we do. As an adult, we often forget about how to
have fun and play. Yoga is a hard and serious practice, but we can always have fun in
whatever we do. It is all about mindset. I have always enjoy the playfulness of creativity in
yoga sequencing. During teaching, I will need to always remember to insert my fun and happy
self and create the joyful environment for me and my students.
