JESSE

JONATHAN'S DAUGHTER /
ALL-KNOWING SAGE

Pretty much the brains behind Sonic Yoga NYC.  Makes all decisions and teaches the fiercest, most-playful 12-hour vinyasa flow classes on the planet...though she just calls it "life!"  She also figured out secret to levitation when she was two...but refuses to share it with anyone till she turns 21. Says we're not ready to handle it yet.  Hmmm.  Jesse remains Jonathan's greatest teacher!

SHELLEY

NYC TEACHER & STUDIO MANAGER

Shelley Adelle is one of our wonderful blossoming teachers, having graduated our teacher training school in 2005, and also plays a major role in keeping the whole community humming and happy as the manager of our New York studio.

Shelley hails from Texas, weaves in and aout of the creative and stage arts when time permits, loves to dance, sing, goof around, have serious discussions about not so serious things, has a secret crush on Puff the Magic Dragon and, of course, loves to ride horses.

STACEY

NYC

Stacey loves teaching yoga and considers it an honor to introduce and guide other yogis in their practices. In her vinyasa classes, Stacey combines a balanced sequence of flowing postures with an exploration of compassion, humor and letting go. As a new mom, she's learning a lot about letting go!   She is particularly honored to teach some of Sonic's great beginner workshops - introducing people to yoga is the best. She is committed to giving newcomers the tools and confidence they need to believe that yoga is for them - no matter what challenges they may face.  As an early graduate of Sonic's 200 Hour Teacher Training program, and as a current member of the Center for Yoga Studies/Teacher Training faculty, Stacey has witnessed the wonderful growth and development of the program, and is proud to help shepherd future teachers.  One of Stacey's favorite things about yoga is that it's a learning experience that goes on forever. She's been blessed to have studied with many wonderful teachers and is currently pursuing a 500 hour teaching certification

JEN

NYC

Orginally from the Pacific Northwest, Jen spent the last decade moving back and forth between coasts, working as an admin assistant for a lot of big companies while trying her hand at film-making, white-water rafting, environmental activism, acting and playwriting. Along the way she was blessed to find two things; awesome travelling companions (a human and two felines) and yoga. Having studied Iyengar and Ashtanga yoga for over seven years, she found her "home" when Life and a well placed ad, led her to Sonic. Currently a Senior Sonic Yoga certified instructor, her teaching is rooted in compassion and her life experiences, notably that in order to go anywhere, one must first stand still...er, ok, so you can shift from foot to foot a bit, but you gotta pretty much stay put.

KEITH

NYC

Keith was born and raised in New York City. A graduate of Boston University School of Law, he has been an entertainment attorney to some of the biggest names in music for several years. These days, however, his law practice takes a backseat to his yoga practice. Keith came to yoga as a way to heal the numerous injuries he received while practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The peaceful practice of yoga also offers a balance to the arm-breaking and neck-cranking of jiu-jitsu. He is a purple belt under Renzo Gracie and teaches the Brazilian jiu-jitsu club at Columbia University. Keith discovered Sonic Yoga and their teacher training program. Drawing from his personal practice (at Sonic and elsewhere around NYC), his martial arts influences and from his active imagination, his aim is to breathe something fresh into his classes.

JOHANNA

NYC

Johanna was raised by a family of itinerant clowns in the forests of Western Maine, before discovering that her freakish ability to make people smile by wrapping her tongue fully around to her ear could make her a lot of money.  She parlayed this extraordinary talent into a million-dollar career before retiring at the age of four. After writing her memiors by age five, she decided to devote herself to dance, breath and movement and, so, chose the most obvious path, investment-banking, before finally finding a home as a fabulously acclaimed dancer, performer and choreographer.  Sometime between age 7 and 47 (she's 106 now), she stumbled into Sonic Yoga's teacher training program became certified, wowed us all from day one and has been teaching to regular standing applause, laughter and, of course, tongue-wagging, ever since.

JEFFREY

NYC

As a young boy growing up on the frozen plains of North Dakota, Jeffrey Duval remembers digging snow caves into 8 foot snow drifts in the front yard and spontaneously twisting into lotus position before he learned to tie his shoes. Since then his yoga practice has evolved, but retains the same essence of using what's available to go inward and explore. Jeffrey Duval embarked on an adventurous and never-ending journey with Sonic's Teacher Training Program in the Fall of 2004. Since then Jonathan and Lauren continue to inspire him ON the mat but to BE yoga off the mat. Jeffrey also dances with Tiffany Mills Company in NYC and has an MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

JOE

NYC

Joe hails from the cornfields in Iowa where, as a young boy, he learned how to stand on one leg, fingers reaching towards the morning sun, to emulate a mature August corn stock or "cornasana".  He moved to the Big Apple to become an actor when he was just 18 years old and eventually opened his own video production company.

Over the years, Joe developed a deep interest in yoga. Once Joe completed his 200-hour teacher training at Sonic Yoga, he discovered that his cornasana and "tree pose" were VERY similar.  (He has yet to copyright his "cornasana".)

Yoga Joe's classes aim is to empower your life through the postures, breath work and meditation.  They will help you openly explore what you seek in life, no matter how big or small, and find the courage to obtain it.

LORI

NYC

Lori has a Dance degree from Emerson College and her 200 Hour Yoga Teaching Certification from New York Yoga.  Prominent teachers who have influenced her include Kaustaub Desikachar, David Hollander, Michael Gilbert, and Nixa DeBellis for Vinyasa, Govinda Kai for Ashtanga, Shiva Rea for Fluid Power, and Sonic's own Jonathan Fields for Baptiste Power. A lover of music and choreography, Lori's classes sync the rhythm of the breath and the challenge of asana to the heartbeat of the Earth.  Come ready to play!

KRISSY

NYC

Krissy has always been connected to her body growing up a dancer and gymnast. She attended acting school where she first learned
a sun salutation in movement class.  During college she taught aerobics, along with many other jobs like artists' model, bartender and librarian.   After college, to balance out her rigorous circus classes, she began taking kundalini, which led her to a meditation practice and to various styles of yoga.  Nothing helped moving to New York more that practicing at Sonic Yoga. She received her 200 hour teaching certificate from Sonic in August 2005.  Along with teaching yoga she is a voice over artist and actress.

MOONY

NYC

Erin has made Sonic her yoga home for... gee... 4 years now and cannot think of a greater group of people! She graduated the Sonic Teacher Training Program with fellow teaching buddies Jeffrey Duval and Erin Mallon in 2004. She is a born and raised Canada girl (Calgary, AB aka "Cowtown" Yehaa!) who met a boy, fell in love, got hitched and moved to NYC in 2002. Erin's Background in Gymnastics, Dance, and the performing arts have lead her down a wonderful path to the practice of Yoga. She believes in bringing joy, breath and light into all parts of life begining with the simplicity of Yoga Asana practice

ERIN M

NYC

Erin's training in dance and theatre led her quietly and naturally to the breath-inspired dance of a vinyasa yoga practice. she is interested in exploring that delicate balance between movement and stillness, and how we use our bodies to express the person living inside. she believes that through the inevitable asymmetries in the body, we can learn so much about where to go. in addition to vinyasa flow classes, she teaches creative children's classes, yoga for the Deaf, and partner yoga workshops.

DANA

NYC

In October 2000, I took a hot yoga class, thinking it would be a great workout.  I had no idea that I would drop smoking forever and start a spiritual and physical journey that is changing me to this day.  Eventually I moved on to vinyasa at Sonic, where I first heard the word "ahimsa."  In the Spring of 2004 I received my 200-hour certification from Sonic, and am blessed to be a part of its extended family today. Since I'm a classical actor and a writer who comes from a "wordy" background, I understand what it's like to have some trepidation about yoga's more Eastern elements. The thing is, the benefits will happen whether we understand them or not, and all we need to do is breathe.  In addition to Sonic, I'm influenced by Anusara, Anna Forest, Iyengar, the Laughing Lotus ladies, Jivamukti, all of my students, and my teacher Sri Dharma Mitra (many thanks).  In class, we'll seek to cultivate strength of vision and body, as well as nonviolence, community, gratefulness, risk-taking, determination, humor, patience, flexibility, and curiosity.  Oh yeah - and it's still a great workout.

KATE

NYC

Kate Greer completed her teacher training at Sonic Yoga in 2005 and is thrilled to be part of the teaching community there. Her own practice has been greatly influenced by the teachers at both Sonic and Kula Yoga Project. She enjoys a sweaty vinyasa flow with a lot of nourishing love…Eager to share her own discoveries in her teaching, Kate likes to incorporate all the new tricks she's learning into her own classes—along with a lot of humor and joy.  Kate found yoga—or yoga found her—while skiing competitively in college but didn't develop a regular practice until she moved to New York. She never dreamed she would discover such a tremendous indoor escape (in-scape) in the city after leaving the Colorado mountains behind. Much thanks to all the people she's sweated next to, loved, and learned from—namaste.
